Required Materials:
Two or three bands with a width of 10 cm.
Effect & Benefits:
The Connecting Body Band is a gentle way to improve a horse’s body awareness. It consists of two individual loops that form a complete body band when connected. This type of setup is especially suitable for horses that are sensitive to contact around the hindquarters. Thanks to the loose connection, the band can be removed quickly while still providing effective support.
This body band is especially suitable for:
- Horses that have never worn a full-body band before.
- Sensitive horses that need time to get used to touch in the hindquarters.
- Situations where the band needs to be easily and quickly removable.
- Horses that require enhanced body awareness and improved connection between forehand and hindquarters.
Application:
- Start by placing a band around the base of the neck. Let the horse get used to this before proceeding.
- Take a second band (or two sewn together for larger horses) and pull one end under the neck band at the withers.
- Tie the two ends together to create two interlocking loops.
- Gently slide the rear loop over the croup and position it so it sits about a hand’s width below the seat bones. Pay attention to the horse’s response.
- Walk a few steps with the horse, then pause and lift the tail out of the loop for added comfort.
Observations:
The band can help horses connect more deeply with their own bodies and reduce oversensitivity in the hindquarters.
It enhances awareness of the hind end and promotes smoother movement.
Since the band allows a lot of movement, it’s important to make sure the rear loop doesn’t ride up too high.
Important Notes:
- The connecting body band can be held in hand at any time for quick release if needed. A second person can hold the rear loop loosely without tying it.
- If the band needs to be removed, the handler can lead the horse forward while the second person stays in place, allowing the horse to step out of the loop on its own.
- If the horse is very sensitive, the band can be extended with extra loops or applied in two steps.
Variations & Advanced Use:
With the addition of more bands, this setup can evolve into a belly or telescopic body wrap, providing even greater body awareness.
Safe Removal:
- Loosen the rear loop.
- Bring the end farthest from you over the hip and around the hindquarters, so the side furthest from you is released first.
