Required Materials:
One strap with a width of 8 to 10 cm.
Effect & Benefits:
The Extended Head Strap helps release tension in the poll and ear area and promotes a more relaxed head carriage. It is especially beneficial for horses with closely set ears, sensitivity around the poll, high head positions, or difficulties when being bridled.
Application:
- Stand on the left side of the horse and hold one end of the strap at the left cheek.
- Gently guide the strap over the left jaw joint, in front of the left ear, over the poll, and behind the right ear.
- Pull the strap under the throat from right to left, then guide it over the base of the left ear, back over the poll, and in front of the right ear.
- Pass the loose end under the throat again and tie it loosely to the starting end.
Observations:
The head strap can visibly reduce tension between the ears and around the poll.
Before-and-after photos often show noticeable changes in ear positioning and signs of relaxation.
Horses that are uncomfortable with poll pressure can learn to relax more easily using this strap.
Important Notes:
- Ensure the strap does not slip over the eyes or press too tightly against the throat.
- If you or your horse have no prior experience with body straps, it’s recommended to start with the basic head strap.
- The extended head strap is less suitable for very sluggish or hard-to-motivate horses, as it can have a calming effect.
Safe Removal:
- Ask the horse to lower its head.
- Gently untie the knot and pass one end through the halter’s cheekpiece to prevent it from flapping around.
- Hold the other end firmly and guide the strap gently under the halter, across the head, until it is completely removed.
- Make sure to keep both ends under control to avoid sudden flapping.
Using this technique can help the horse become more comfortable with touch around the poll and ears, leading to more relaxation and better acceptance of the halter or bridle over time.
