Required Materials:
One strap with a width of 8 to 10 cm.
Effect & Benefits:
The Facial Strap connects the poll, the sides of the mouth, and the bridge of the nose. It supports horses that are sensitive to touch around the mouth and can promote more relaxed bridling or deworming. It is especially helpful for horses with negative experiences due to dental treatments or injuries.
Application:
- Place one end of the strap behind the poll.
- Guide the other end under the cheeks (ganaches).
- Cross the strap over the nose at a height comfortable for the horse — depending on sensitivity, this may be just below the eyes or further down near the mouth.
- Guide the strap to the opposite side and tie it loosely under the cheeks.
Observations:
Many horses visibly relax with the facial strap, lowering their heads and becoming more receptive to touch around the mouth.
It can serve as a “buffer” between the sensitive mouth area and direct contact.
Important Notes:
- The strap should not be too tight, especially around the throat or over the airways.
- If the horse reacts very sensitively, a soft cloth can be wrapped around the noseband area to make the contact even gentler.
- Work in small steps and watch for signs of stress or discomfort.
Alternative Method for Nervous Horses:
- First, wrap the strap twice around the neck and tie the ends loosely.
- Then carefully guide one end over the ears and let it gently slide down along the nose.
With this technique, the horse can gradually become accustomed to touch around the face and mouth area, which can lead to greater relaxation and acceptance of bridling or veterinary procedures over time.
