Figure-Eight Body Strap

Required Materials:
Two straps with a width of 8 to 10 cm.

Effect & Benefits:

The figure-eight body strap is a helpful tool to support a horse’s holistic body awareness. It encircles the entire body and can aid in improving the horse’s body perception and coordination of movement. Since it is not rigidly fixed, freedom of movement is maintained while the horse receives gentle sensory input through the strap.

It is suitable for horses that are already familiar with using bands around the neck and hindquarters. It is especially useful for:

  • Horses that feel insecure when touched from behind or from the sides.
  • Young horses being introduced to wearing a girth or being lunged.
  • Horses with limited body awareness or unbalanced movement.

Application:

  1. Connect two straps to form one long unit.
  2. Guide one end of the strap under the neck and over the withers, bringing it back down on the other side.
  3. Hold the crossing point of the straps near the withers with one hand and gently unroll the remaining length.
  4. Tie the two ends together with a knot that is easy to undo. Position the knot so it rests on the horse’s right side. The straps should form an X-shape across the horse’s back.
  5. Loop the second part around the hindquarters so that the rear section of the strap lies about a hand’s width below the seat bones, and the front part is positioned just above the elbow joint.
  6. Make sure the knots are even on both sides of the horse and do not interfere with any sensitive areas.

Observations:

The figure-eight body strap can have an immediate effect on how a horse moves. Especially horses that are insecure or unfocused may find a more stable posture and improved concentration through its use.

Important Notes:

  • Ensure the straps are neither too tight nor too loose. They should rest gently without causing pressure points or slipping.
  • For very large or long horses, an additional strap may be required.
  • While working with the horse, check regularly that the straps remain properly positioned and have not shifted.

Variations & Advanced Use:

If the horse seems uncertain when the strap is applied in one step, it can be introduced in two separate sections at first.
